On a business trip to Paris, Maggie Purcell buys the perfect gift for her terminally ill sister a calligraphy love letter. But an ancient scroll, mysteriously wrapped with the gift, catapults Maggie and her business associate Reeve into a world of kidnapping and pursuit after the shopkeeper falls victim to a brutal murder and dies before her eyes. Maggie and Reeve flee back to the States where they soon learn that the scroll is not, as Maggie had believed, a stylized fake. Written in ancient Aramaic, it is a Dead Sea Scroll that dates back to the lifetime of Jesus Christ. Signs indicate that it may have been written by Christ himself, but as the secrets of the scroll begin to reveal themselves to Maggie, she can hardly believe what she’s stumbled upon.
Battling terrorism, torture and kidnapping, Maggie and Reeve find themselves caught up in an ancient battle of good vs. evil, and a miracle she could have never even hoped for.

In The Scroll Part 1, Cat LeDevic's fantastically written characters are introduced to us through Maggie Purcell. The relationships are complex, and for the most part, realistic (her 12 year little sister is mature and intelligent beyond her years, but not entirely unbelievable.)Maggie's family is her main concern. Complicated by leukemia, alcoholism, and selfishness, it's held together by love, hope, and selflessness. Though not sure if I looked into this too much, there may have been a hint of some things yet to be revealed about this family, but I'll leave it at that.
Fascinating and witty little anecdotes not only revealed more and more about Maggie, but they also made me want to be her friend! She's just so smart and well traveled, but still humble and kind. The traits she lacks, Reeves (her close friend/coworker/admirer/it's complicated) makes up for and tries to balance her out. The two work well together, and I can't wait to see how that relationship develops.
The thrilling set up for the story is exciting and well written, but it's just that...the set up. I got a Dan Brown vibe from the ancient scroll and mystery surrounding the Sons of Light, but I suppose I'll have to wait an see how it plays out.
I can tell right away that this will continue to be a thrilling ride, and I can't truly can't wait to continue on!
