On a routine business trip to Pennsylvania, Jeff Parker awakens at 2am in the Home Away From Home Suites to a loud knocking at his door... A voice outside claims there is a gas leak. At first angry and suspicious, Jeff makes the fatal mistake of opening the door...

Jeff's mother, Sara, worries when she does not hear from him. She recruits old family friend and detective Bill Anderson to help, and they both venture off in search of the missing man. Bill has checked into Room 203 of the same hotel. But will Bill and Sara manage to find Jeff in this eerie place, or will they fall prey to the same mysterious, chilling fate that has befallen him?

Following on from his powerful "11th Floor" series, but with less gore and more complex and likeable characters, Charles Culver infuses his latest suspense-packed novelette with a sense of malign yet banal evil.

DISCLAIMER: I was contacted and asked by the author to review this story. This did not influence my review or rating. I was not given a complimentary copy, although I downloaded it from Amazon when it was listed as free.

Having previously read and reviewed one of the author's earlier books (The 11th Floor), I already knew that reading this book would be a thrilling experience. The description helped to whet my appetite for what this story was to offer. While The Foreman shows improvement on Mr. Culver's technique as a writer, it isn't perfect; but it is most definitely worth a read for fans of horror.

STORY - Like I said, the description does a great job of prefacing the story. The plot basically deals with a creepy hotel and a man who vanishes from it. His mother and a private detective try to seek him out, which proves to be a much more complicated matter than they first thought: a typical formula for thrills and chills.

The story is frightfully strong. There were many heart pounding moments that had me wishing I weren't reading the book in the dark. You can never quite predict what's going to happen next, and that contributed to making the experience that much creepier. A few story aspects were never quite explained, but the ending was definite and gave the story closure.

WRITING STYLE - One of the first things I noticed about this story was that in the beginning a significant amount of backstory was given in between the primary action. I thought most of it was unnecessary, and I would have preferred to get straight into the story. I also wish the scenes contained in the middle of the download has just a tiny bit more meat to them: not so much to bog down the story but enough to add more ambience to the setting. Most of the horror was focused in the direct actions happening in the book, which was admittedly very effective, but some moodiness would have accentuated the action perfectly.

I only counted one typo in the entire download, and it was simply a missing punctuation mark. The story was without a doubt edited well, and I appreciate that with many messy books littering the kindle ebook market.

The characterization was excellent in the story. I found this to be the greatest improvement over the previous story I had read by the author. There weren't that many characters, and I was able to form a strong opinion of each of them as the story progressed.

WARNINGS - Language, Horror elements

OVERALL - This ebook is short; it maybe took me thirty minutes to read. Its current price of almost three dollars is probably a bit steep for such a short story. Just because I'm so thrifty, I would recommend waiting until the download goes on sale before buying it; however, I definitely recommend snapping it up when you get a chance as it is a wonderful story, especially for those who enjoy mystery and horror stories.

The Foreman edition by Charles Culver Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

it's okay
I know it was a short story but I need more. I was good but I was upset at the end.
I have read all of Mr. Culver's books to date. I enjoyed the 1st and the follow up (the 11th floor & the Awakening). However, I must say I enjoyed this one more. A bit less gory for my taste with a more involved story line. Looking forward to the next one...
This was a really good book. It made me tense and just a bit stressed from worrying over the characters. I would have given it 5 stars, but, while the ending was good, the excuse for these happenings was completely mundane. Yep, I'd recommend this story.
