Who joined Gloria Steinem and Bella Abzug in the formation of the National Women’s Political Caucus…led in the national effort for the Equal Rights Amendment. Who believed that welfare was a trap and disrespectful of women putting her at odds with many of her social justice contemporaries. Who left a high salary government position to live with women on welfare in San Antonio and created a private training model that helped hundreds of women get a job and burn their welfare checks! And with recognition by national media – 60 Minutes - and the support of several Presidents her program spread throughout the United States.
The scope of this book is the life of Lupe Anguiano from birth until the age of 80. It was compiled from fifty exclusive recorded interviews conducted with Lupe and key people in her life by Debora Wright. Some of these interviews were conducted while traveling with Lupe to the places of her childhood as well to San Antonio, the site of her most significant life experience. These transcribed interviews were further augmented by an in-depth study of the Lupe Anguiano papers archived at the UCLA Chicano Studies Research Center. Author Debora Wright uses her keen sense of history and her subject’s own words to reveal Lupe Anguiano’s loves, sacrifices, victories, failures and deepest thoughts.

I was so amazed how Lupe’s deeply felt beliefs guided her through life with such strength and determination. She is a person so real and hard working; the type of woman I greatly admire. Thank you Debbie Wright for all your research on her struggles and successes and putting it down on paper!
Great book about a woman who truly made a difference. It shows how compassion and commitment from a single person can change the political course. Lupe used rational thought to become a true force.
I liked the way she incorporated ordinary people into her development of the story.
This is a woman that directly influenced the lives of thousands of women. Her impact was felt on the national level as well as throughout state capitols and most importantly in the communities of the people she helped. Her deep principles are rooted in her faith. Her commitment was to equality for those that needed it most. Observe, judge and act upon it! Thru this book I discovered an unsung hero in the struggle for women's equality, the civil rights movement and an environmental steward. We need more Lupes!!!!
Lupe is a rock star! Every politician should learn from her example on how to help the struggling families of our country. She wanted to understand who she was helping so she lived with them and went where they went. Reading Uncompromised is an inspiration to us all to help others in the way that Lupe did. I got this book as a gift for my Mother for her birthday and she loved it! It is a very well-written story about an amazing lady who was truly uncompromised in her fight to do what was right for others and show them that there are alternatives to achieve a better life. She truly changed a challenged demographic to believe that they have more to offer than what society had originally dictated as their role. This is an uplifting true story about a pioneer for welfare reform- beautiful and inspiring!
